Thinking about work-based training in accountancy?
Aspiring chartered accountant, Finlay, tells us about his career journey in accountancy and finance
Finlay is studying with Leeds-based Kaplan Financial towards a Level 3 AAT qualification. We asked him about his journey into a career in accountancy and finance.
Why did you choose to study for a career in accountancy and finance?
“Since high school I’ve wanted to do corporate finance or investment banking. Studying and gaining work experience in practice will open doors for me and I could go into one of many related jobs in the future. I’m also gaining transferrable skills which are valuable in any line of work and outside of work too.
“I want to become a Chartered Accountant and should be ready to start studying ACA in 12 months’ time. That will bring more opportunities to progress and experience different disciplines in finance, it nurtures a diverse skill set and generally leads to greater rewards.”
Why did you choose work-based study over a different study route?
“I wanted to be in employment to get workplace experience in support of real clients whilst I study. The apprenticeship is also very flexible so I can easily blend the time in college with work to suit both me and my employer. The mix varies for each course but each one requires about 5 days in college and takes a few months to compIete, and I can get them done in my own time (within reason).
“I think it’s a more effective way to learn when you have real world examples to apply the theory to. I’m effectively surrounded by teachers and mentors in the form of qualified accountants at Parsons; they are all very supportive, happy to steer me in the right direction and answer my questions.”
Do you enjoy working at Parsons?
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Parsons so far, they’ve given me good support through my exams and college work.
“We are a very diverse team which mixes ages and experience, backgrounds and interests so that I feel I really fit in here.”
